What is timber grade?

Did you recently buy a plot? Are you looking for the best wood for your structure? Don’t sweat it! Consider this blog as your guide for all your problems.

Any house requires wood for structure and furniture. Timber is the most widely used wood for construction purposes. It’s a  wood that first originated in the 9th century. Also known as lumber, it is a renewable resource. Not just durable, it is more durable than any other type of wood. In addition, it gives your house an aesthetic feel.

You might be wondering about the process of making it. Timber-making is a long process and is done with due consideration. Here is a step-by-step process of making the wood-

Cutting of trees

This is the first step in which a team of workers cuts down trees. Only those trees used are mature and appropriate for production. This process is also known as felling. It is done with the help of chainsaws. After felling, the logs are trimmed and sent to the warehouse for further debarking.

Removal of the bark

As soon as these trees reach the warehouse, their barks are removed. It is also known as debarking. They are then broken into already decided lengths.

After debarking, these logs are then sawed. Sawing is done so that the number of wood pieces obtained is at its best. In this way, the wood does not get wasted.

Removing excess moisture

This is probably the most crucial step of the process. It involves seasoning the wood to drain all the remaining moisture. If the wood is not seasoned, it starts to deform and decay.

The final step of the process is grading. All the intact and best pieces of wood are approved. The remaining ones are recycled and used for making wooden products.

We learned about the meaning and process of making lumber. But did you know that you can use it for several other purposes?

Here are four common uses of timber

Apart from construction purposes, you can use it for several other things, like-

Source of fuel

It is used as a heat source when combusted to fulfil domestic purposes and produce energy. Reports confirm that 40% of unused lumber is used as fuel. Although, this function is mainly dependent upon the availability of coal, oil, gas, and solar energy in your area.

Paper production

Paper is produced from its pulpwood. Different types of paper required for books, magazines, flyers, magazines, newspapers, etc., are derived from Timberwood. Several categories of paper like photos, parchment, packing, and envelope are also made from it.

This type of wood is most famous for furniture in today’s modern world. This is so because we can very quickly carve designs into it. Also, it makes the most beautiful wooden showpieces and products you can use for decor purposes.

Plywood and veneers

They are long and thin sheets made from Timberwood. They come in various styles and colours for you to choose from. Unique 3D carved designed veneers are trending for flooring styles.

For the purposes mentioned above, recycled logwoods are used. So, not even a piece of wood get’s wasted. These are determined by grading. Let’s dig deeper into this topic!

What everybody ought to know about timber grade

You have learned that timber grading refers to approving appropriate logs for the construction process. There are two ways to conduct grading. Visual and machine testing. The former has been in practice since the 1970s. It required a team of trained workers to find any issues with the wooden pieces. However, the latter use modern machines with X-ray visions to approve the best out of the lot. Machine testing was not employed due to its cost.

Three factors are used to grade lumber: the type of wood, product, and quality grades. ‘A degree is said to be the prime quality of timber. Grades 1-3 are allotted in descending order to decide the quality. The detailed system of grading is mentioned below-

This is also known as the ‘A’ grade and is of the most optimum quality. It is expensive because of its character. Minor or no knots are present in the logs and are used for construction and furniture because of their perfect finishing.

Grade 1

You may find a few knots here and there. But, its quality is equivalent to the prime type. It is slightly more cost-effective than prime timber.

They include grade 2-3 quality logs. The other name is joinery. More knots and sap are present. They are the cheapest and most cost-efficient alternative for buyers.

Grade 4 quality also exists. But, they are deemed to be of poor quality and are avoided due to their defects.
